Though it's ranked among the top five low-residency writing programs in the country, ranking had little to do with author and former air traffic controller Cheryl Wright-Watkins choice to attend the MFA in Writing at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Through Watkins' interview in Niche Magazine, get a first hand account of the attributes that lead to the MFA in Writing's high national ranking:

  • Designed to fit your personal and professional life while you grow as a serious writer
  • Individualized study designed around your goals and intensive dialogue with award-winning faculty
  • A close community of writers engaged in rigorous residencies on our beautiful Vermont campus or our summer/winter residency option in Slovenia and Puerto Rico.
  • Tracks in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, as well as a concentration in translation. Dual-genre study options available including study in Writing for Children & Young Adults.

Our diverse and highly accomplished faculty work across multiple genres; students can focus in one area or work in parallel, exploring and blending several. Twice a year, there are week-long intensive residencies on our lovely campus above Montpelier, Vermont, filled with lectures, readings, presentations, workshops and individual conferences with faculty mentors.
